Mid-Infrared Laser-Based Medical and Forensic Sensing(1)

The International Symposium on Photonics and Optoelectronics(SOPO 2014)——Laser spectroscopy as a valuable tool for applications in the fields of medicine and forensic science is discussed. Various setups and their main features are presented. The performance of laser-based sensing systems is illustrated with examples of human breath analysis, surgical smoke analysis during minimally invasive surgery with electric knives, first in vivo results of non-invasive glucose monitoring with laser-photoacoustic spectroscopy and cocaine detection in human saliva with FTIR-ATR (attenuated total reflection) and quantum cascade laser transmission spectroscopy.
