Dual-wavelength Tm-Ho co-doped fiber laser around 2 μm based on cascaded filter

The International Symposium on Photonics and Optoelectronics(SOPO 2014)——In this paper, we developed and experimental demonstrated a dual-wavelength Tm-Ho co-doped fiber laser at 2 μm region, which is based on the cascaded filter. Uniqueness lies in the cascaded filter is that the dual-channel Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and the spatial mode beating effect are employed in our experimental configuration. In addition, the spatial mode beating effect is induced by embedding a section of few-mode fiber (FMF) with about 8 μm core offset splicing in a Sagnac ring configuration. Besides, like our previous work, a dual-stage amplification system based on the Er3+-Yb3+ co-doped fiber (EYCDF) is used as our 1570-nm pump source. The gain medium used in our experiment is a section of Tm-Ho co-doped fiber (THCDF). When it comes to steady state, the dual-wavelength laser locates at 1887.4 nm and 1889.4 nm, respectively. The proposed dual-wavelength laser shows good quality (SMSR ~35dB) and excellent stability (wavelength drift ±0.04 nm and power fluctuation <0.3 dB). It means that higher quality and better stability is achieved compared with our previous work. Thanks to the good laser performance and its superiorities of cost effective, simple structure, easy to construct, it has potential applications in the fields of atmospheric propagation, microwave photonics, and eye safety.
