Ultrabroadband four wave mixing of few-cycle mid-infrared pulses for characterization of their temporal shape and time-domain spectroscopy

The International Symposium on Photonics and Optoelectronics(SOPO 2014)——Combination of ultrashort pulses in the mid-infrared and nonlinear-optical methods of pulse characterization can be considered as a powerful tool for spectroscopic applications. We demonstrate that cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating (XFROG) based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a gas medium is shown to enable a broadband dispersion-free characterization of a few-cycle output of difference-frequency generation (DFG) in the 3–15-m wavelength range. The spectral modulation of an ultrashort mid-infrared pulse induced by molecular vibrational modes can give rise to high-visibility interference patterns and well-resolved echo revivals in the time domain, which can be read out by means of XFROG based on broadband FWM in a gas phase, suggesting a powerful tool for the detection, recognition, and remote sensing of molecular vibrations and rotations.
