Status and Challenge of Graphene Applications in Li-ion Batteries(2)

2014中国国际石墨烯创新大会(Grap-China 2014)——Status of few layer graphene (FLG) applications in Li-ion batteries including 3C, energy storage, EV, and HEV is summarized. The challenges or limitations of graphene are identified to be not only long adoption of new technology, and also the property anisotropic nature (similar to carbon nanotube - CNT and graphite), and possibly blocking ionic conduction due to the 2D geometry. The very early stage of FLG applications can be categorized into three major areas: 1) as electrical or thermal conductive fillers in all types of cathode electrodes, or possibly in graphite anode; 2) as an interfacial buffer layer coated onto Al current collector (Cathode) and possibly on Cu current collector (Anode); 3) Possibly as high capacity anode materials mixed with Si.SuperC FLG in all electrode systems (LCO, LFP, and NCM) shows lower percolation threshold than CNT, and thus leads to ultra-low loading in the electrodes. This improves battery performances and reduces costs.
