DC Grid and Related Technology for Smart Grid Development(2)

IEEE TENCON 2013——With the increased development of our modern society in a limited resource environment, increased amount of electricity have to be transmitted over long distances using efficient electricity transmission technologies and in a more secured and smarter manner. Electricity transmission networks are additionally required to integrate increased amount of renewable energies in order to minimize the impact of fossil-fuel electricity generation on the environment. The presentation overviews the development of AC and DC transmission technologies, including the challenges that the existing electricity transmission networks have to overcome to meet the increased capacity demands. The concepts for multi-terminal DC network and DC grid are explained in conjunction with plans of DC system developments in major countries. Key technologies which are essential for the development of future DC system, such as DC system modeling and simulation, DC system protection and control, DC system fault detection and prevention, DC system reliability, as well as DC system related equipment, are summarized and their latest R&D status are briefed.
